Why wall hang a basin

A wall hung basin frees up the floor. With no cabinet beneath, the floor tiles run through to the wall, the room feels larger and cleaning takes seconds. It is a strong choice for powder rooms, small ensuites and minimal bathrooms where a full vanity would crowd the space. Because the basin is the only thing on the wall, its shape and colour do all the talking, so it pays to choose the tiles behind it at the same time.

Plan it before the wall is sheeted

Concrete basins are heavy, so the fixing matters:

• Solid fixing: ask your builder to add timber or steel noggins in the wall where the basin will hang.
• Height: decide the rim height before the plumbing goes in, as it sets where the waste and water exit the wall.
• Waste: with no cabinet to hide it, the trap and waste are on show. A bottle trap in a finish that matches your tapware looks neat.

Tapware for wall hung basins

A wall mixer with a separate spout above the basin is the classic pairing, and keeps everything on one wall. Measure the reach from the finished tile to the centre of the bowl. If you would rather avoid a wall mixer, a shelf basin carries a basin mixer on its own ledge.

Storage ideas

No vanity means less storage, so plan for it. A recessed shaving cabinet, a tiled niche or bathroom shelves near the basin keep essentials close. A towel rail or ring beside the basin finishes the setup.
