Fix tired grout without regrouting

Grout is usually the first thing in a tiled room to look old. It stains, darkens in showers and goes patchy on floors, even when the tiles are still fine. Regrouting means raking out every joint, which is slow, messy and risks chipping tile edges. A grout colourant takes a different route: it coats the existing grout in a new, even colour and seals it at the same time. It suits a bathroom or laundry that is sound but tired, a kitchen splashback that has yellowed, or a floor where the grout has gone patchy in the walkways.

Colour'N'Seal by Sealers Plus

Colour'N'Seal is a waterborne epoxy grout colourant from Sealers Plus, made in 24 shades. Use it to:

  • Renew stained or blotchy grout back to an even colour.
  • Re-colour grout to suit a new look, such as switching from white to grey.
  • Seal the grout line as part of the same step.

How it is done

  • Clean the grout thoroughly first with a grout or heavy-duty cleaner, and use a stain remover for marks that will not shift.
  • Let the joints dry completely.
  • Apply the colourant along the joints with the Colour'N'Seal Applicator, working in small areas.
  • Wipe excess off the tile face as you go, following the label.

Grout colourant works on sound grout. If joints are cracked, crumbling or missing, they need repairing or regrouting first. Gaps at internal corners and around baths are a job for silicone, not grout.

Choosing a shade

Pick the shade against the tile, not the old grout. A shade close to the tile gives a calm, seamless look, while a contrasting shade makes the tile shape stand out. In showers and on floors, a mid-tone hides everyday marks better than bright white. For new tiling, see our grout, and for tile and grout ideas, browse bathroom tiles.

FAQs

Can I change white grout to a darker colour?

Yes. Colour'N'Seal can re-colour grout to any of its 24 shades, so white grout can become a grey or a darker tone. Going darker is easier to get even than going lighter. Test a small area first.

Do I need to seal grout after using a colourant?

Colour'N'Seal colours and seals in the same step, so the treated joints do not need a separate grout sealer. Follow the label for drying time before the area gets wet.

Will a grout colourant work on mouldy shower grout?

Remove the mould first with a suitable cleaner, then let the grout dry fully. The colourant needs a clean, sound joint to bond to. If the grout is soft or crumbling, regrout those joints before colouring.

Can I use a grout colourant on floors as well as walls?

Yes, it is used on floor and wall grout in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries. Floors collect more dirt, so clean them thoroughly before you start. Give the colourant its full drying time before you walk on it.
