What the P ratings mean

In Australia, floor tiles are tested with a wet pendulum under Australian Standard AS 4586 and given a P rating. The higher the number, the more grip the tile has when wet. As a simple guide:

  • P3: most indoor home floors, including bathrooms, kitchens and laundries.
  • P4: shower floors, wet rooms, entries and many outdoor areas.
  • P5: uncovered outdoor areas, pool surrounds, ramps and areas that are often wet.

The rating for each tile is on its product page, and you can filter this collection by it.

Grip without losing the look

Slip resistance no longer means rough, industrial tiles. This collection includes Marvel Travertine Look in vein cut and cross cut, Precious Travertine Indoor + Outdoor, Travertine Soft Stone, Ivory Stone Look, Micro Cement White Textured and Terrazzo Rosso Crema, along with Builders Range options such as Republic Grey, Polar Ice and Bravo Travertine. Italian ranges such as Boost Icor, Boost Expression, Nyra and Marvel Diva Taj Mahal bring a high-end finish.

Finish names to look for:

  • Matt: the everyday indoor finish, most often P3.
  • Grip and external: a textured surface for outdoor and wet areas, most often P4 or P5.
  • Honed and textured: smooth or tactile stone looks that still give grip.

Balancing grip and cleaning

The more texture a tile has, the more it holds onto dirt. That is fine on a patio, but in a bathroom you want the lowest rating that is safe, usually P3 on the main floor and P4 in an open shower. Clean textured tiles with a stiff brush and a pH-neutral cleaner from our tile cleaners.

Who needs P4 and P5

Homes with young children, older relatives or anyone with limited mobility benefit from higher ratings in bathrooms and entries. For shops, cafes and public spaces, see commercial tiles. Outside, browse outdoor tiles, pool tiles and pavers. Inside, the same ratings appear across shower tiles and bathroom tiles.

FAQs

What does P3, P4 or P5 mean on a tile?

It is the tile's wet pendulum slip rating under the Australian Standard. P3 suits most indoor home floors, P4 suits showers and wet rooms, and P5 suits pools, ramps and uncovered outdoor areas. Higher numbers mean more grip when wet.

Are anti-slip tiles harder to clean?

A little, because the textured surface holds more dirt. Regular sweeping and a stiff brush with a pH-neutral cleaner keep them looking fresh. Choose the lowest rating that is safe for the area to keep cleaning easy.

Can I make my existing tiles less slippery?

Anti-slip treatments can etch or coat some tiles to improve grip, but results vary and may need reapplying. Replacing the floor with a properly rated tile is the most reliable fix.

Is a P3 tile safe for a shower floor?

P3 is generally accepted for home shower floors and is easier to clean. If the shower is open, used by children or older people, or tends to stay wet, P4 gives more peace of mind.

Do anti-slip tiles look industrial?

Not any more. Travertine, limestone, terrazzo and concrete looks in this collection come in grip finishes that look very close to their indoor versions. Order a sample to feel the texture before you buy.
