What makes zellige special

Zellige is a traditional Moroccan glazed clay tile, shaped and cut by hand. The surface is uneven, the edges are slightly irregular and the glaze varies in depth and colour from piece to piece. Laid together, the tiles shimmer and move with the light. Small chips, pits and shade differences are part of the character, not a defect.

Moroccan handmade zellige

Our genuine zellige comes in several shapes:

  • Zellige Moroccan Square: the classic square for splashbacks and full walls.
  • Zellige Square 50 x 50 mm: a small format for detailed feature walls and niches.
  • Zellige Bejmat: a slim rectangle, laid in stack, brick or herringbone patterns.
  • Zellige Honeycomb: a hexagon shape; see more hexagon tiles.

Zellige-look tiles

If you love the glaze but want more even sizes and an easier install, choose a zellige look. Mosman at 100 x 100 mm, Majorca Series porcelain at 100 x 100 mm and the Artisan subway and square give the glossy, wavy surface with tighter tolerances. Lume and Lume 2.0 Italian subway at 60 x 240 mm, Zellige Italian Wall Tile, Gleeze, Glace and Portofino Brick at 65 x 260 mm round out the range.

Colours

Green and white are the largest groups, followed by blue, beige, pink and terracotta. Look for teal, olive, sage, turquoise, musk and ocean blue for a bold splashback, or snow white for a softer one. See green tiles, blue tiles and pink tiles.

Where and how to use zellige

Every tile in this collection is a wall tile, made for splashbacks, shower walls, vanity walls and laundries. Genuine zellige is usually laid with tight joints and benefits from a sealer before grouting so grout does not cling to the textured glaze; see tile sealers. Order a little extra to allow for sorting. For softer handmade looks, see handmade tiles.

FAQs

Is it normal for zellige tiles to have chips and uneven edges?

Yes. Real zellige is cut by hand from glazed clay, so small chips, pits and shade differences are normal. Many people sort through the tiles before laying and keep the most irregular pieces for cuts.

Does zellige need to be sealed?

Genuine handmade zellige is usually sealed before grouting so grout does not stick in the textured glaze, and again afterwards to protect the joints and any exposed clay. Zellige-look porcelain does not need sealing.

Can zellige be used in a shower?

Yes, on the walls. The glazed face handles water well, and a sealed grout joint keeps it clean. Zellige is not designed for floors, so use a porcelain floor tile in a matching tone underfoot.

What is a bejmat tile?

Bejmat is a narrow rectangular zellige tile. It is laid like a subway tile in a stack, brick or herringbone pattern and gives a longer, more linear look than square zellige.
