When a floor standing vanity makes sense

A floor standing vanity rests its weight on the floor rather than the wall. That makes it a good choice when:

  • the wall is a lightweight partition or has no blocking for a wall hung cabinet;
  • your waste and water pipes come up through the floor, as they often do in older homes;
  • you want a vanity that looks like a piece of furniture, in a classic, coastal or Hamptons-style bathroom.

If you would rather keep the floor clear, compare wall hung vanities.

The range

Broadhurst 900mm package: from Serano Surfaces, Design Tiles' own range. An oak and rattan cabinet on turned legs, with a Taj Mahal porcelain top, round basin and arched LED mirror. See all vanity packages.

Aulic minis: three compact pieces from Aulic for powder rooms and guest toilets. The Civaro pillar vanity is 420mm wide in Matte White. The Mini Ravia is 450mm in fluted Matte White, and the Mini Hartelle is 470mm in fluted Harvest Oak.

Tiling and installation tips

  • Tile first: lay the floor tiles wall to wall before the vanity goes in. If you ever move or replace it, there is no gap in the floor.
  • Check the floor is level: bathroom floors with falls toward a drain can tilt a cabinet. Ask your installer about packing or adjustment.
  • Plan the pipes: pipes from the floor need to line up with the open back or base of the cabinet.

Matching basin and taps

Before you choose tapware, check how the basin sits on each vanity. An above counter basin needs a tall basin mixer or a wall mixer with enough reach, while a basin set lower takes a standard mixer. The product page shows the basin and tap hole for each model. Warm oak and rattan suit gold tapware, while matte white looks crisp with black tapware.

FAQs

Are floor standing vanities harder to clean around?

There is less open floor beneath them, so you clean around the base or legs instead. Models on legs are easier, as a mop reaches underneath. If easy cleaning is your top priority, a wall hung vanity is the better choice.

Should I tile under a floor standing vanity?

Yes, we recommend tiling the whole floor before the vanity goes in. It protects the floor from leaks and means you can change the vanity later without patching the tiles.

What is the smallest floor standing vanity in this range?

The Aulic Civaro pillar vanity is the most compact at 420mm wide, followed by the Mini Ravia at 450mm and the Mini Hartelle at 470mm. They suit powder rooms and small guest toilets.

What comes with the Broadhurst package?

The Broadhurst package includes the oak and rattan cabinet, a Taj Mahal porcelain top, a round basin and an arched LED mirror. Tapware is chosen separately, so you can match it to the rest of the room.
