Privacy turnsnibs and mortice locks

This collection covers the locks that sit with our lever door handles.

  • Privacy turnsnib locks let you lock a door from the inside with a small turn. They suit bathrooms, toilets, ensuites and bedrooms. Choose the Knurled or Linear profile to match your handles.
  • The mortice lock is a lock body set into the edge of the door and worked with a key and cylinder. It suits doors that need to be locked with a key, such as a home office, storeroom or garage access door, and it sits with the Knurled, Linear and Luma ranges.

All are solid stainless steel with a PVD finish in Aged Bronze, Brushed Gold, Brushed Nickel, Gunmetal or Matte Black.

Which lock does each door need?

  • Passage doors (hallways, living rooms, wardrobes) do not need a lock.
  • Privacy doors need a turnsnib on the inside. For a family bathroom, talk to your builder about how the door can be opened from outside in an emergency.
  • Keyed doors need a mortice lock with a cylinder and keys.
  • Front doors often pair a lock with a feature pull. See our stone entry pulls.

Match the lock to the handle

A lock in a different finish to the handle stands out straight away. Choose the same profile and colour as your door handle: the Knurled turnsnib for knurled levers, and the Linear turnsnib for linear levers. For Luma doors that need privacy, the Privacy Luma Door Handle Package groups the lever with the privacy hardware.

Buying for the whole house

For a renovation or new build, it is simplest to order door by door. A hardware package groups the handle, lock, hinges and stop in one finish, and you can add door hinges and door stops separately where you need more. Keep a list of which rooms need privacy and which need a key, and use it when you order so nothing is missed.

FAQs

What is a privacy turnsnib lock?

It is a small thumb turn on the inside of a door that locks it without a key. It is the standard choice for bathrooms, toilets and bedrooms, where you need privacy rather than security.

What is the difference between a mortice lock and a privacy lock?

A mortice lock is set into a pocket cut into the edge of the door and is worked with a key, so it secures the door. A privacy lock simply stops the door being opened while someone is inside.

Do the locks match the Zephra door handles?

Yes. They come in the same five PVD finishes, and the turnsnibs share the Knurled and Linear profiles, so the lock and handle look like one set.

Does fitting a mortice lock need a carpenter?

Usually, yes. The edge of the door has to be cut out accurately to take the lock body, and the frame needs a matching strike plate. It is easiest to do before the door is hung or painted.
