Rust Away Non-Acidic Rust & Metal Stain Remover — Sealers Plus

Removers for marks that have soaked in or dried on: grout haze and cement residue after tiling, rust and bore water stains, oil in porous stone and organic marks on paving.

Find the right remover for the mark

Different stains need different products, so the first step is to name the mark.

  • Grout haze and cement residue: the dull film left on a tile face after grouting. Use Haze Away or Lithofin KF Cement Residue Remover.
  • Rust and metal marks: from bore water, pot plants, outdoor furniture or steel fixings. Use Rust Away, a non-acidic rust and metal stain remover.
  • Oil and grease in stone: marks that have soaked into porous stone. Poultice Powder is mixed into a paste, spread over the stain and left to draw it back out as it dries.
  • Tannin, leaf shadow and other stubborn marks: common on outdoor paving. See Active Plus, and check its product page for the stains and surfaces it suits.

Acidic or non-acidic?

Some removers are acidic and some are not, and that matters. Acid can etch marble, limestone, travertine and other calcium-based natural stone, leaving a dull patch that is harder to fix than the stain. On acid-sensitive stone, choose a non-acidic option such as Rust Away, and always read the label before you start.

Test first, then treat

  • Try the product on a small hidden area or a spare tile.
  • Follow the dwell time on the label. Leaving a product on longer is not always better.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • On stone, check the sealer afterwards and reseal if needed with a product from sealers.

After the job

Once the mark is gone, keep the surface clean with a pH neutral cleaner. If grout is clean but still blotchy, a grout colourant can even it out. Need an anti-slip treatment or a sealer stripper instead? Those are in surface treatments. For the full ranges, see Sealers Plus, Lithofin and all our tiling supplies.

FAQs

How do I remove grout haze from new tiles?

Wait until the grout has set, then use a grout haze or cement residue remover as the label directs. Work in small sections, scrub lightly and rinse well. Test on a spare tile first, especially on polished or natural stone surfaces.

What causes orange rust stains on tiles and pavers?

Most come from bore water, metal furniture legs, pot plant bases or steel in the slab. A rust remover lifts the stain so it can be rinsed away. Fix the source too, or the stain will come back.

Can I get an oil stain out of natural stone?

Often, yes. A poultice draws oil back out of the stone as it dries, and stubborn stains may need more than one application. The sooner you treat it, the better the result.

Are stain removers safe on marble?

Not all of them. Acidic products can etch marble, limestone and travertine. Choose a non-acidic remover, test it on a hidden area, and reseal the stone once the stain is gone.
