What a shower arm does

The shower arm is the pipe that comes out of the wall and holds the shower rose. It sets how high the water falls and how far it reaches into the shower. Many roses are sold on their own, so the arm is a separate choice and it makes a real difference to how the shower feels.

Shower arm styles

  • Straight wall arm: the ADP Eternal shower arm at 400 mm projects out from the wall for a classic overhead position.
  • Curved arm: the Meir Round wall shower curved arm, also 400 mm, bends gently downward to drop the rose a little lower.
  • Upswept arm: the Caroma 460 mm upswept arm angles upward before levelling off. It lifts the rose higher, which suits tall people or a low wall outlet.
  • Right-angled arm: the Caroma 415 mm right-angled arm runs out from the wall and turns down at 90 degrees, so the rose hangs flat.
  • High-rise arm: the Meir high-rise shower arm raises the rose well above the wall outlet for a generous drop.

Choosing the right length and height

Measure from the wall outlet to where you want the centre of the rose. A longer arm puts the water closer to the middle of a large shower. A shorter arm keeps the spray near the wall in a compact recess. If your outlet is low, an upswept or high-rise arm can lift the rose without moving the plumbing. Check that the arm thread matches your rose before you order.

Matching your shower

Most arms come in chrome, black, gold and nickel, and several also come in bronze and gunmetal. Match the arm to your shower mixer and rose, or skip the parts list and choose a complete shower set. Browse all showers, or pair the finish with shower tiles for the whole wet area.

FAQs

What length shower arm do I need?

Most wall arms are around 400 mm, which puts the rose comfortably over a standard shower. Choose a longer arm for a large walk-in shower, and a shorter one if the shower is narrow. Measure from the wall outlet to the spot where you want the water to fall.

What is an upswept shower arm for?

An upswept arm rises at an angle before it levels out, so the rose sits higher than the wall outlet. It is a simple fix for a low outlet or for taller people who want more head room under the water.

Does a shower rose come with an arm?

Not always. Many roses are sold as the head only, so check the product page. If you want everything in one box, a shower set includes the rose, arm or rail and often a hand shower.

Can I replace a shower arm without retiling?

Usually, yes. The arm screws into a fitting behind the wall, so a plumber can swap it without lifting tiles, as long as the new arm has the same thread and the cover plate hides the old hole.
