Shower floors: grip and falls

A shower floor is wet every day, so grip comes first. This collection includes tiles rated P3, P4 and P5. For an open walk-in shower or a wet room, P4 or P5 gives extra confidence underfoot. Matt, grip and textured finishes are the safest choices. See anti-slip tiles for the full slip-rated range.

The floor also has to fall to the waste. Smaller tiles bend with the falls more easily, which is why 300 x 300 mm tiles and mosaics are popular on shower floors. The Alhambra Flower marble mosaics, in Botticino, Sage Green, Viola, Travertine Beige and Portuguese Limestone, add grip through their many grout lines. If you prefer a large tile, ask your tiler about a linear grate, which lets the floor fall in one direction.

Shower walls

Walls do not need a slip rating, so you can use gloss, handmade or textured tiles. Brighton White Ceramic 300 x 600 mm, Clovelly 2.0 White Subway and Linen Natural White 50 x 150 mm are clean, classic choices. Zellige Moroccan Square Handmade Tiles and the Mosman zellige look tile add shimmer. For a calm, spa-like look, wrap the whole shower in one porcelain such as Travertine Soft Stone or Marvel Travertine Look.

Niches and feature walls

A recessed niche is the perfect place for a contrast tile. Try a sage green or viola marble mosaic in the niche, a strip of Beige Clay Matt Kit Kat along the back wall, or Travertine Soft Stone 3D for texture. See mosaic tiles, kit kat tiles and feature tiles.

Before you tile

  • Waterproofing comes first. Tiles and grout are not waterproof on their own. The membrane underneath does that job and must be installed before tiling.
  • Seal natural stone. Marble mosaics and stone need sealing in a shower. Porcelain does not.
  • Choose a good grout. An epoxy or high-performance grout resists mould and staining in wet areas. Find grout and sealer in tiling supplies.
  • Plan the tapware. Wall mixers sit on a body built into the wall before tiling, so choose your shower sets and wall mixers early.

FAQs

What slip rating do I need for a shower floor?

P3 is the common minimum for home shower floors. For walk-in showers, wet rooms and accessible bathrooms, P4 or P5 gives more grip. The slip rating is listed on every tile page.

Are mosaics or large tiles better for a shower floor?

Mosaics and small tiles follow the falls to the waste easily and give more grip through extra grout lines. Large tiles look seamless but usually need a linear drain so the floor can fall in one direction.

Can I use the same tile on the shower floor and walls?

Yes, if the tile is rated for floors and has a suitable slip rating. One tile throughout makes a small bathroom look bigger. Some people switch to a mosaic in the same tone on the shower floor for extra grip.

How do I stop mould on shower grout?

Ventilate well, squeegee the walls after use and clean weekly with a mild tile cleaner. Epoxy grout resists mould better than standard cement grout, and sealing cement grout helps too.

Is marble a good choice for a shower?

Marble works in a shower if it is sealed properly, resealed over time and cleaned with pH-neutral products. Acidic cleaners can etch the surface. For lower upkeep, choose a marble look porcelain.
