Visible or concealed cistern?

This is the first decision. A close coupled suite has the cistern on the pan. It is quick to install, easy to service and often suits a straight replacement. A concealed cistern hides the tank in the wall behind a flush button. It looks cleaner, gives a little more floor space and lets the tiles run uninterrupted, but it must be planned before the wall is sheeted.

Planning a new toilet

• Water point: check whether your supply comes from the wall behind the cistern or from below, and choose back entry or bottom inlet to match.
• Waste position: measure from the finished wall to the centre of the floor waste, and compare it with the product page before you order.
• Water use: every toilet sold in Australia carries a WELS star rating, so compare ratings on each product page.
• Timing: choose the toilet before tiling, so your plumber and tiler can work around it.
