What is a freestanding basin?

A freestanding basin is a complete unit that does not need a vanity cabinet to hold it. The Nood Co Cylinder range takes this furthest: a concrete column that stands on the floor with the bowl at the top. It suits powder rooms, guest bathrooms and any space where you want the basin, not the cabinet, to be the feature.

The range

The Nood Co pedestals include the Cylinder Bowl, the Cylinder Bowl Two Tone, the Cylinder Stepp Circle and the Cylinder Prism Circle. Each pairs a round bowl with a cylinder base, and the two-tone version lets you combine two colours in one piece. See the full Nood Co range for wall hung and benchtop basins with related bowl shapes.

The collection also includes the Contura II 530mm Freestanding Basin from Caroma. Check its product page for how it is installed.

Plan the plumbing before you tile

A pedestal basin has no cabinet to hide the pipes, so it needs more planning:

  • Waste: agree with your plumber where the waste will run, through the floor or the wall behind, before the floor is laid.
  • Water: most people pair a pedestal basin with a wall mixer and spout, roughed in before tiling.
  • Spout reach: measure from the finished wall to the centre of the bowl. The spout must reach far enough that water lands in the bowl, not on the rim.
  • Floor: concrete is heavy, so the basin needs a solid, level floor.

No storage? Plan around it

Without a cabinet, you need somewhere for soap and towels. Add bathroom shelves, a recessed niche in the wall tiles, or a towel rail beside the basin. A mirror cabinet above is another neat option.

Styling ideas

Pedestal basins look strongest against a simple backdrop. Try one in front of fluted tiles or a vertical stack of subway tiles, and keep the floor plain so the column stands out. For more bowl shapes, compare our round basins.

FAQs

Does a freestanding basin need a vanity?

No. A freestanding pedestal basin carries its own weight on the floor and needs no cabinet or wall bracket. You will need to plan storage elsewhere in the room.

What tap should I use with a pedestal basin?

A wall mixer with a separate spout is the usual pairing, as there is no benchtop to mount a tap on. Measure the reach from the finished wall to the centre of the bowl before you buy. Have the in-wall body fitted before tiling.

Where does the waste go on a freestanding basin?

The waste position depends on the basin, so check the product page and installation details. Your plumber needs this before the floor and wall are tiled so the pipes can be set in the right place.

Can I choose two colours on a concrete pedestal basin?

Yes, the Nood Co Cylinder Bowl Two Tone is designed for a two-colour finish. Check the product page for the colour combinations available.
