What is a shelf basin?

A shelf basin has a flat ledge cast into the basin itself. The tap mounts on that ledge, so you do not need a tap hole in your benchtop or a wall mixer set into the wall. It is a neat, self-contained solution that suits small rooms and simple renovations.

The range

All five shelf basins are hand-cast concrete from Nood Co:

• Shelf 01, Shelf 02 and Shelf 03: three rectangular shelf designs.
• Loop 01: another rectangular design with an integrated ledge.
• Shelf Oval: the softer option, with an oval bowl.

Why choose one

• Benchtops stay intact: handy on a timber or stone top where you would rather not drill, or on a top you may want to change later.
• Simpler plumbing: a mixer on the basin avoids roughing in a wall mixer before tiling.
• Small rooms: wall hung shelf basins suit powder rooms and ensuites where there is no space for a vanity.

Choosing the tap

Because the mixer sits on the ledge, it needs to suit a basin-mounted tap hole. Look for a basin mixer with a spout that reaches the centre of the bowl from the ledge. As the tap starts at the height of the basin, a tall vessel mixer is usually not needed. Check the tap hole size on the basin page against your mixer before buying.

Wall hung installation

If you wall hang a shelf basin, the waste and the water connections come out of the wall below it. Choose a neat bottle trap in a matching finish, and ask your builder to add solid fixing in the wall before it is sheeted.
