Path tiles for garden paths, side passages, entry walkways and steps: slip-rated pavers, terracotta and brick looks, cobbles, French pattern and bullnose for step edges.

Paths need grip first

A path is walked in every weather, often in shade where moss and leaves settle. Choose P4 or P5 for any open path, and this collection has plenty of both. External and grip finishes keep their texture when wet, and mid tones such as grey, beige and silver travertine hide dirt between sweeps.

Classic path looks

  • Terracotta and brick: Alice Red Terracotta Square 300 x 300 mm and Subway 60 x 240 mm, Sagunto Cotto and Sagunto Mid Terracotta Look 333 x 333 mm, and London Brick 60 x 250 mm suit cottages, courtyards and Federation homes. The Spanish Federation Series adds a heritage feel. See terracotta tiles.
  • Stone looks: Kavala Stone Look Porcelain Paver 600 x 600 mm, Colorado Slate Stone Look and Stone Hub for modern entries.
  • Travertine: Marvel Travertine Look, Builders Range Silver Travertine Look and Dorica Travertine Look 600 x 1200 mm.
  • Cobbles and pattern: Primi Cobbles Terrazzo Look, Concord French Pattern and natural stone crazy pave for a relaxed garden path. See French pattern tiles.

Steps and edges

Paths often meet steps, garden beds and pool areas. A bullnose tile gives each step a rounded, finished edge. Try Precious Travertine Bullnose 368 x 600 x 20 mm with the matching Precious Travertine Paver 600 x 600 x 20 mm, or Alice Red Terracotta Steptread 300 x 300 mm for a terracotta stair. See pavers and pool coping.

Laying a path

Standard tiles are glued to a concrete base. 20 mm pavers can instead be laid on a compacted base of crushed rock and sand, which suits many garden paths. Either way, give the path a slight cross-fall so water runs off into the garden rather than pooling. Small formats such as 300 x 300 mm and brick sizes follow curves and level changes more easily than large tiles.

Carry the same tile through to the outdoor areas it connects: see patio tiles and pool tiles, or driveway tiles where cars will cross.

FAQs

What is the best tile for a garden path?

A porcelain paver or outdoor tile with a P4 or P5 slip rating. It handles rain, leaves and moss without becoming slippery and needs no sealing. Natural stone and crazy pave look great too but need sealing.

Can terracotta tiles be used on an outdoor path?

Yes. Terracotta paths suit heritage and Mediterranean-style homes. Natural terracotta is porous and should be sealed, while terracotta look porcelain such as Barro or Sagunto gives the colour with less upkeep.

How do I finish the edge of a step on a path?

Use a bullnose tile on the front edge of each tread. It gives a rounded, comfortable edge and a finished look. Choose a bullnose that matches your paver, such as Precious Travertine Bullnose with Precious Travertine Paver.

Do I need a concrete base for a tiled path?

Standard tiles must be glued to a concrete base. 20 mm porcelain pavers can be laid on a well-compacted base of crushed rock and sand instead, which is often simpler for garden paths. Ask your landscaper which suits your soil.

How do I stop moss growing on a shady path?

Give the path a slight fall so water does not sit, sweep regularly and clean with an outdoor tile cleaner. Porcelain resists moss better than porous stone, which should be kept sealed.
