What is French pattern?

French pattern, also called a modular pattern, mixes several tile sizes in a repeating set. The rectangles and squares interlock to create an informal, cobbled look that hides the repeat. It has paved European courtyards for centuries and is now a favourite for alfresco areas and pool surrounds. Because the sizes vary, small cuts and slight level changes are easier to hide than with one large tile.

Natural stone options

  • Premium Classic Tumbled Travertine: warm beige stone with softened, tumbled edges and a lived-in feel.
  • Travertine Silver: a cooler grey-silver travertine that suits modern homes and grey or white pool interiors.
  • Crema Sienna Limestone: a soft, creamy limestone with an even texture.

Like all natural stone, these should be sealed after laying.

Porcelain French pattern

  • Concord French Pattern: a stone-look porcelain made for modular paving.
  • Terra French Pattern: an Italian porcelain in earthy tones, from sand to terracotta.

Porcelain gives the look of stone with no sealing and strong stain resistance. The porcelain options come in matt and grip finishes, and two products in this collection carry a P4 slip rating, which suits patios, ramps and pool surrounds.

Sizes and thickness

Alongside French pattern sets, the range includes 610 x 406 mm and 610 x 610 mm pieces. Most come in two thicknesses. Choose 12 mm for indoor floors and areas laid on a flat concrete slab, and 30 mm pavers for patios, paths and pool surrounds.

Where to use it

  • Patio tiles and alfresco floors.
  • Pool surrounds, with matching pavers for coping.
  • Garden path tiles.
  • Living areas that open to the garden, for indoor-outdoor flow.

FAQs

What thickness do I need for outdoor French pattern?

Use 30 mm pavers for patios, paths and pool surrounds, where they take more load. The 12 mm option suits indoor floors and areas laid on a flat concrete slab. Ask your installer which method suits your site.

Does French pattern travertine need sealing?

Yes. Travertine and limestone are porous and should be sealed after laying, then resealed every few years outdoors. The porcelain French pattern options need no sealing.

Is French pattern hard to lay?

It takes more planning than a single size, because the pieces must interlock without long straight joints running through the floor. Your tiler should dry-lay a section first to set the sequence before fixing.

Is French pattern travertine slippery around a pool?

Tumbled travertine has a textured, open surface that gives good grip when wet. For porcelain, look for a P4 or P5 rating, and two products in this range are rated P4.
