Mapei at Design Tiles

Mapei is an Italian maker of tile adhesives, grouts and building products, and a familiar name on tiling jobs. We stock the Mapei products that cover the two big jobs in any tiling project: sticking the tile down and filling the joints. Choosing adhesive and grout from one maker keeps the system simple. If you are tiling yourself or briefing a tiler, it helps to know what goes under and between the tiles before the job starts.

Grout: Ultracolor Plus

Ultracolor Plus is a fast-setting grout in 17 colours, for joints from 1.5 mm to 20 mm. It has Mapei's DropEffect water repellency and BioBlock mould resistance, which suit showers, splashbacks and laundries. It is sold in 5 kg bags. See grout for help choosing a colour.

Adhesives: Keraflex Maxi S1 and Ultralite S1 Flex

Both are S1 deformable adhesives in 20 kg bags, made for porcelain, ceramic and stone.

• Keraflex Maxi S1 holds a thick bed without the tile sliding, which suits heavy and large format tiles.
• Ultralite S1 Flex is lightweight and spreads further per bag, so there are fewer bags to carry.

Planning a tiling job

For most bathrooms and kitchens you will need:

• An S1 adhesive suited to the tile size and the surface.
• A grout colour chosen against a real tile sample.
• Silicone for internal corners, the wall-to-floor junction and around baths and trays, matched to the grout.

Then finish with the right care: a haze remover after grouting from stain and haze removers, and a pH neutral cleaner from then on.
