Feature tiles for statement walls, niches, splashbacks and fireplaces: 3D and concave mosaics, patterned and handmade tiles, zellige and hand-glazed Japanese finishes.

Where a feature tile works best

A feature tile is the one surface people notice first, and it works best in one deliberate place:

  • Behind the vanity or bath, where it frames the mirror.
  • In a shower niche, where a small area of special tile goes a long way.
  • On a kitchen splashback, between the benchtop and cabinets.
  • On a fireplace or entry wall in living spaces.

Keep the surrounding tiles plain so the feature has room to breathe.

Texture and 3D

Texture catches the light and changes through the day. Try Carrara 3D Stack Mosaic, Concave Kit Kat Stack Black Mosaic, Apollo Natural Stone Concave Mosaic or the Tufa X-Cut 3D Linear Feature Wall Tile for depth without bold colour. See 3D and texture tiles and fluted tiles.

Pattern and colour

For pattern, Italian D Segni Series Patterned Tile and the Retromix Series bring graphic designs to a floor or wall, and encaustic tiles add a heritage touch. For colour, Rubik Square 123 x 123 mm, Glazed Solid Square Mosaics and the Rainbow Series come in rich glazes, and the collection as a whole runs from sage and teal to terracotta and pink.

Handmade and hand-glazed

Handmade tiles have irregular edges and pooled glaze that machine-made tiles cannot copy. Look at the Manacor Series Spanish Handmade, Artisan Spanish Subway & Square, Rustic White Handmade Subway and MANO Handmade Look Ceramic. Kazoku Hatsu Long Subway and Hatsu Border are hand-glazed Japanese tiles, and the Zellige Italian Wall Tile gives a classic zellige shimmer. See handmade tiles, zellige tiles and Kazoku.

Finishing touches

Frame a feature with a marble pencil border such as Calacatta Pencil Border 150 or 305, or the Kazoku Hatsu Border. A vertical stack of Frame Linear or the Plinto Spanish Feature Wall Tile at 107 x 542 mm makes a wall feel taller. FAQs

How much of a room should be feature tile?

Usually one wall or one zone, such as behind the vanity or inside a niche. Too many features compete with each other. Keep the floor and other walls quiet so the feature stands out.

Can feature tiles go inside a shower?

Most can, as long as they are suited to wet-area walls. Natural stone and some handmade tiles need sealing in a shower. Check the Room details on the product page.

What grout should I use with handmade or zellige tiles?

Choose a grout close to the tile colour so the glaze and irregular edges do the talking. Handmade tiles vary in size, so your tiler may need a slightly wider joint than with porcelain.

How do I finish the edge of a feature wall?

Use a pencil border, a metal trim or a bullnose piece where the tiles stop. Marble pencil borders such as Calacatta Pencil Border give a neat, traditional edge to a splashback or niche.

Are 3D tiles hard to clean?

They need a little more care than flat tiles because dust and soap can sit in the grooves. A soft brush and a mild cleaner do the job. In a shower, place 3D tiles away from the direct spray where you can.
