Tiles made for walls

Walls give you more freedom than floors. A wall tile does not need a slip rating, so gloss glazes, thin ceramic, handmade surfaces and 3D textures are all on the table. This collection holds every tile suited to walls, including many that also work on the floor.

  • Ceramic and subway: Brighton White Ceramic 300 x 600 mm, Clovelly 2.0 White Subway 75 x 300 mm and Linen Natural White 50 x 150 mm are bright, simple choices for bathrooms and laundries. See subway tiles.
  • Handmade and zellige: Zellige Moroccan Square Handmade Tiles and the Mosman 100 x 100 mm zellige look tile have a glossy, uneven surface that catches the light. See zellige tiles.
  • Mosaics: Alhambra Flower marble mosaics, Beige and Brown Clay Matt Kit Kat and the Botanica Kit Kat Series add detail to niches and vanity walls. See mosaic tiles.
  • Large wall tiles: Porcelanosa wall tiles in 596 x 1500 mm, such as Taranto Marfil marble effect, Santorini Bone concrete effect, Hannover stone effect and Gent Roble wood effect, cover a wall with very few joints.

Gloss, matt or texture?

Gloss reflects light and makes a small bathroom or splashback feel brighter. It is also the easiest finish to wipe clean. Matt is the most common finish in this collection and gives a softer, more modern look that hides water marks. 3D and textured tiles, such as Travertine Soft Stone 3D, create shadow and depth on a feature wall. See 3D and texture tiles.

Wall tile layouts

How you lay a tile changes the room. A horizontal brick bond is the classic subway layout. A vertical stack of subway or finger tiles draws the eye up and makes a ceiling feel higher. Herringbone suits a splashback or a feature wall. Large formats laid floor to ceiling give a calm, seamless look with minimal grout.

Pairing walls with floors

Many tiles here are rated for both floors and walls, so you can run one tile through a whole bathroom. If you prefer contrast, pair a patterned or coloured wall with a plain floor tile, or keep the walls white and add a feature tile behind the vanity. Not sure what goes together? FAQs

Can wall tiles be used on the floor?

Not always. Many wall tiles, especially thin gloss ceramics, are not rated for floors and would be too slippery or too fragile underfoot. Check that the product page lists Floor as a use before laying it on the ground.

Are gloss wall tiles hard to keep clean?

No, gloss is usually the easiest finish to clean because soap and water residue wipe straight off. It does show water spots more than matt, so a quick squeegee after a shower helps.

Can I tile over existing wall tiles?

Sometimes, if the old tiles are firmly bonded, flat and clean, and the wall can take the extra weight. Many tilers prefer to strip back to a sound surface, especially in wet areas. Ask your tiler to assess the wall first.

What grout colour suits white wall tiles?

White or pale grey grout gives a clean, seamless look. A darker grout outlines each tile and suits subway or kit kat layouts where you want the pattern to show. Darker grout also hides marks better on a busy wall.

Do you stock large wall tiles with few grout lines?

Yes. Our Porcelanosa wall tiles come in 596 x 1500 mm, and many porcelain ranges come in 600 x 1200 mm. Both cover a wall with far fewer joints than standard sizes.
