What is stone cladding?

Stone cladding is a layer of thin natural stone fixed to a wall to give the look of solid stonework, without the weight and cost of a structural stone wall. It adds texture and depth, and works on house facades, front fences, garden and retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces and living room feature walls.

Our cladding range

Every product in this collection is natural stone, suited to indoor and outdoor walls:

  • CZ Katoomba Ledge Stone: stacked horizontal strips with deep shadow lines, the classic ledgestone look.
  • CZ Culburra Random: irregular pieces for a rustic, dry-stone wall feel.
  • CZ Laguna and CZ Roma: limestone cladding with a soft, even texture.
  • Cz Avoca and Wollombi: sandstone cladding with a natural, earthy character.

The range also covers granite and quartzite for harder-wearing, cooler tones. Explore the stones themselves in sandstone tiles, limestone tiles and natural stone.

Ledgestone or random?

Ledgestone is cut into long, narrow strips stacked horizontally. It gives a neat, contemporary look with strong shadow lines, and suits fireplaces and modern facades.

Random stone uses irregular shapes fitted together like a puzzle. It feels more natural and relaxed, and suits garden walls, cottages and coastal homes. It sits well beside crazy pave paving.

Installing stone cladding

Stone cladding is heavy, so it needs a sound, rigid backing such as masonry, concrete or a suitable cement sheet, fixed with an adhesive made for stone. Plan for corners, edges and the top of the wall before you start. Outdoors, seal the stone to help resist water, dirt and mould, and make sure water can drain away from the base of the wall. Find stone adhesives in tile adhesives and sealers in tile sealers.

FAQs

Can stone cladding be fixed to plasterboard?

Usually not on its own. Natural stone cladding is heavy and generally needs a rigid backing such as masonry, concrete or a suitable cement sheet. Check the weight and fixing advice with your installer before you start.

Does stone cladding need sealing?

Sealing is recommended, especially outdoors and around fireplaces or cooking areas. A penetrating sealer helps the stone resist water, dirt, soot and mould without changing its natural look.

What is the difference between ledgestone and random stone cladding?

Ledgestone is cut into long, thin strips and stacked in horizontal rows for a neat, modern look. Random stone uses irregular shapes fitted together for a rustic, natural wall.

How do I work out how much stone cladding I need?

Measure the height and width of each wall in metres and multiply to get the square metres. Take away large openings such as windows, then add extra for cutting and fitting around edges.
