Sandstone in a Sydney setting

Sandstone is a sedimentary stone made of compacted sand grains, with a soft, slightly gritty surface and warm colour. It is the stone of many Sydney cliffs, walls and older buildings, so it sits naturally in local gardens and courtyards. This is a small, focused collection, with a few real stone products and one porcelain option.

Natural sandstone or porcelain?

Natural sandstone is one of the more porous stones, so it soaks up water, oil and leaf stains if left unsealed. Seal it after installation and keep up regular resealing, especially in shady or damp spots. In return, you get a surface with real depth and a texture that weathers gracefully.

Sandstone-look porcelain absorbs almost no water, needs no sealing and is easy to clean. It is the better choice for indoor floors, bathrooms and areas where you want a uniform finish. Check the slip rating before using any tile outdoors: choose P4 or P5 for wet areas and around pools.

Planning an outdoor area

Combine materials for a finished look. Lay crazy pave on a path, clad a retaining wall in sandstone and use porcelain pavers on the main patio. For other natural stones in similar tones, see limestone and the wider natural stone collection, and pick up sealer from tile sealers.

FAQs

Does sandstone need to be sealed?

Yes. Sandstone is very porous and will absorb water, oil and organic stains. Use a penetrating sealer made for natural stone after installation and reseal regularly, especially outdoors.

Is sandstone a good choice for a pool surround?

Sandstone can work around a pool if it is sealed and has a non-slip surface, but it is softer than many stones and needs regular care. A sandstone-look porcelain or a dense paver with a P4 or P5 rating is lower maintenance.

How do I clean sandstone pavers and cladding?

Sweep or rinse regularly and use a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid high-pressure water close to the surface and harsh acids, which can wear away the sandstone grains.

What is crazy pave sandstone?

Crazy pave is stone cut into irregular, random shapes and laid like a jigsaw with mortar joints between. It gives a natural, informal finish that suits paths, courtyards and garden areas.
