Classic patterns in real marble

Marble mosaics have lined bathroom floors for generations, and the classic patterns still look right in period and modern homes.

  • Basketweave: Carrara rectangles framing small dots of Nero, Thassos or Cinderella Grey, in honed or tumbled finishes.
  • Octagon: Octagon Carrara Tumbled, and Octagon Nero + Carrara Dot Honed for a black-and-white floor.
  • Parquet and Castle: Carrara and Thassos combined in geometric blocks.
  • Herringbone and hexagon: see our herringbone tiles and hexagon tiles.
  • Penny round: Carrara, Viola and Mint Green dots. See penny round tiles.

Modern and decorative designs

  • 3D stack and concave: Carrara 3D Stack, Mint 3D Stack and Concave Carrara Kit Kat give depth and shadow.
  • Feather, flower and Art Deco: Feather Carrara Honed, Flower Pink Green + Thassos and the Art Deco Marble Mosaic Series for a decorative splashback.
  • Crazy pave: Rosso, Carrara Bardiglio and Calacatta Viola in random shapes for a relaxed, organic look.
  • Fluted: Carrara Mini Bamboo Flute and Botticino Mini Split bring fine vertical texture.

Choosing your marble

Carrara is soft white with grey veining and the most versatile choice. Calacatta is whiter with bolder veins. Thassos is an almost pure white marble, often used as a contrast dot. Pietra Grey and Nero bring dark contrast. Viola, Rosso and mint marbles add colour for a more personal look.

Where to use marble mosaics

Nearly all are rated for floors and walls, so they suit shower floors, ensuite floors, kitchen splashbacks, laundry walls and niches. Honed and tumbled finishes give better grip than polished on wet floors.

Marble is porous and sensitive to acids, so seal it after installation and use a pH-neutral cleaner. Find suitable products in tile sealers and tile cleaners. For larger formats, see marble tiles, or compare travertine and limestone mosaics in stone mosaic tiles.

FAQs

Is marble mosaic a good choice for a bathroom floor?

Yes, it is a classic choice. The small pieces and grout joints add grip, and honed or tumbled finishes are less slippery than polished marble. Seal it well and wipe up spills promptly.

Will marble mosaics stain or etch?

Marble can etch with acids such as lemon juice, vinegar and some cleaners, and it can stain if left unsealed. A good penetrating sealer and pH-neutral cleaning keep it looking its best. Honed marble hides light etching better than polished.

What is a basketweave marble mosaic?

Basketweave pairs small rectangles laid in alternating directions, with a small square dot where they meet, so the pattern looks woven. Ours use Carrara with dots of Nero, Thassos or Cinderella Grey.

Which grout colour suits a Carrara mosaic?

A white or light grey grout keeps Carrara soft and seamless. A mid grey picks up the veining and hides marks on a floor. Avoid very dark grout with white marble unless you want a strong outline.
