A laundry floor that copes with water

Laundries see wet clothes, spills and buckets, and many have a floor waste. Choose a porcelain tile with a matt finish and a P3 slip rating or higher. Porcelain needs no sealing and shrugs off detergent drips. If the laundry opens to the yard, a P4 or P5 tile helps when shoes come in wet.

The Builders Range suits laundries well. Polar Ice, Dusk White and Shine Bianco keep a small room bright, while Republic Grey, Mars Silver and Patrone Ash hide dirt between mops. See the full Builders Range.

The splashback above the tub

The wall behind the tub and taps gets splashed every wash, so tile it at least to the height of the wall cabinets. Brighton White Ceramic 300 x 600 mm and Clovelly 2.0 White Subway 75 x 300 mm are clean and simple. For more personality, try Beige or Brown Clay Matt Kit Kat, the Botanica Kit Kat Series or Zellige Moroccan Square Handmade Tiles. See splashback tiles and subway tiles.

Making a small laundry feel bigger

  • Use a 600 x 600 mm tile on the floor. Fewer grout lines make a narrow room look wider.
  • Keep floor and walls in close tones, such as warm white and cream, so the space reads as one.
  • Run a vertical stack of subway or kit kat tiles to draw the eye up.
  • Add colour in one place only, such as a sage green splashback.
  • Choose a micro cement look such as Micro Cement White Textured for a soft, modern floor with grip.

Matching the rest of the house

Laundries often sit next to a bathroom or kitchen. Using the same floor tile as your bathroom or kitchen keeps the house consistent and simplifies ordering. Finish the room with a kitchen mixer or wall tapware in the same finish as the rest of the home.

FAQs

What is the best floor tile for a laundry?

A matt porcelain tile with a P3 slip rating or higher. It handles water and detergent, needs no sealing and is easy to mop. Mid tones such as grey, greige or warm white hide lint and footprints well.

How high should I tile a laundry wall?

At a minimum, tile the splashback behind the tub and taps. Many people tile to the underside of the wall cabinets, or to the ceiling above the tub, which looks neater and is easier to wipe down.

Does a laundry floor need waterproofing?

Laundries are wet areas, so the floor and the wall behind the tub usually need a waterproof membrane under the tiles. Your tiler or waterproofer will know the requirements for your home.

Can I use the same tile in my laundry and bathroom?

Yes, and it often looks best where the rooms sit side by side. Choose a floor-rated porcelain with a suitable slip rating and it will work in both.

Are budget tiles fine for a laundry?

Yes. The Builders Range offers porcelain floor and wall tiles in popular looks, and they suit a hardworking room well. If you want character, spend on one feature, such as the splashback.
