Natural travertine or travertine look?

Natural travertine is a limestone formed by mineral springs, which gives it soft, earthy tones and its signature pitted surface. Our natural range includes tumbled squares, subway tiles, kit kat and mosaic sheets in Rome beige, Noce brown, Silver and Red travertine, plus French pattern pavers for patios and pool surrounds. Like all natural stone, every piece is unique and it needs sealing.

Travertine look porcelain captures the same warmth in a tile that needs no sealing, resists stains and comes in slip-rated finishes for floors, showers and outdoors. Several of our travertine look ranges are Italian-made, in large formats up to 1200 x 1200 mm.

Vein cut vs cross cut

Travertine looks different depending on how the block is sliced. Vein cut shows long, linear bands for a calm, modern look that suits long rooms and feature walls. Cross cut shows a cloudy, mottled pattern for a softer, more classic feel. Several of our ranges come in both, so you can mix them in one home.

Where to use travertine tiles

  • Bathrooms and showers: honed and matt finishes with a P3 or higher slip rating, paired with travertine mosaics or a fluted feature wall.
  • Kitchens and living areas: large-format travertine look porcelain flows from inside to outdoor tiles for an indoor-outdoor look.
  • Patios and pools: 20 mm pavers and bullnose in P4 and P5 grip finishes, or tumbled natural travertine in French pattern. See pavers and pool coping.
  • Feature walls and splashbacks: stack, concave and flute mosaics add texture without overpowering the room.

Colours and pairings

Travertine runs from bianco and ivory through beige and sand to silver, grey, noce and red. Warm beiges pair well with brushed brass or gold tapware and timber vanities. Cooler silvers and greys suit black or nickel fittings. For a complete stone look, see limestone, marble and stone look tiles, and order samples to compare tones in your own light.

FAQs

Does travertine need to be sealed?

Natural travertine is porous and should be sealed after installation and resealed every few years, especially in wet areas and outdoors. Travertine look porcelain does not need sealing. You will find sealers and cleaners in tiling supplies.

Is travertine slippery?

Polished natural travertine can be slippery when wet, but tumbled and honed stone and our grip-finish porcelain are made for floors. Check the slip rating on each tile: P3 suits most indoor floors, and P4 or P5 suits outdoors and pool surrounds.

What is the difference between vein cut and cross cut travertine?

Vein cut is sliced along the stone's layers and shows long, straight bands. Cross cut is sliced across them and shows a softer, cloudy pattern. The stone is the same; the cut changes the look.

Can travertine tiles be used outdoors and around pools?

Yes. Choose tumbled natural travertine or a travertine look porcelain with an external or grip finish, and use matching 20 mm pavers and bullnose for pool coping.

Can I order a travertine sample?

Yes. Order a sample from the tile page or browse our sample packs, and compare colours in your own light before you buy.
