Shades of purple

Purple in tile comes almost entirely from natural marble. Viola marble has a creamy base with dramatic purple and burgundy veins. Regal purple is deeper and more solid. Lilac tones are softer and suit a calmer room. Some ranges come in several colours, and this page shows each tile's purple variant.

Materials and looks

  • Natural Viola marble: Calacatta Viola tumbled tiles, honed squares and subway tiles, and arch-shaped stone. See marble tiles and natural stone.
  • Marble mosaics: penny round, 25 mm square, split face, stack and Tuscan dot and picket patterns, plus an Alhambra flower mosaic. Browse marble mosaic tiles.
  • Marble-look porcelain: Italian Calacatta Viola porcelain in large formats for floors and walls without sealing.
  • Slabs: Arabescato Viola and Lilac New York megaslabs at 3200 x 1600 mm for near-seamless walls. See slab tiles.

Where purple tiles work

Purple is a statement colour, so use it where it can be the hero: a vanity wall, a powder room, a shower niche or a bar splashback. A full slab wall of Viola marble look creates a dramatic bathroom with very few joins. Keep floors and other walls quiet so the veining stands out. Honed and tumbled finishes feel soft and natural, while large-format porcelain gives a cleaner, more modern take on the same stone. Natural marble should be sealed after installation, especially in wet areas; you will find sealers in tile sealers.

Pairing purple tiles

Grout: a cream or soft white grout matches the base colour of Viola marble and lets the veins carry the pattern. Avoid dark grout on fine mosaics, as it can look busy.

Tapware: brushed brass and gold bring out the warmth in Viola veining. Brushed nickel gives a cooler, softer finish. Purple marble also sits well beside our cream tiles on the floor and plain white walls.

FAQs

What is Viola marble?

Viola is a marble with a cream or white base and bold purple to burgundy veins. Calacatta Viola is the best known. Every piece is different, so the pattern varies across the wall.

How do I care for purple marble tiles?

Seal natural marble after installation and reseal it from time to time. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner and avoid acidic products such as vinegar, which can etch the surface.

Is there a Viola look that does not need sealing?

Yes. Calacatta Viola porcelain is an Italian marble-look tile that gives the colour and veining of the stone without the need for sealing. It suits floors and walls in large formats.

Where should I use purple tiles in a home?

Purple works best as a feature: a powder room, a vanity wall, a shower niche or a bar splashback. Keep the surrounding surfaces neutral so the colour and veining stand out.
