Tiles for living rooms, dining areas and open-plan floors: large format travertine, marble, stone and terrazzo looks that carry from room to room and out to the alfresco.

Large format for open-plan living

Living areas are where large tiles shine. A 600 x 1200 mm or 1200 x 1200 mm tile covers a big floor with very few grout lines, so the room looks calm and continuous. It also makes it easy to run one floor through the kitchen, dining and lounge without a break. See large format tiles, and allow 20 percent extra when you order.

Popular looks for living floors:

  • Travertine: Marvel Travertine Look in vein cut and cross cut, Travertine Bianco Veincut and Travertine Soft Stone. See travertine tiles.
  • Marble: Builders Range Calacatta Vero and Oro Bianco for soft veining. See marble tiles.
  • Stone and concrete: Ivory Stone Look, Opera White Stone Look and Micro Cement White Textured.
  • Terrazzo: Terrazzo Rosso Crema for a warm, speckled floor. See terrazzo tiles.

Matt, honed, lappato or polished?

Living areas are mostly dry, so you have a wider choice of finish than in a bathroom. Matt is relaxed and hides footprints. Honed is smooth with a gentle sheen. Lappato is semi-polished and catches the light softly. Polished gives a mirror-like shine and suits formal rooms, but is more slippery if something spills. For homes with children and pets, matt or honed is the easy-living choice.

Indoor-outdoor flow

This collection includes tiles in external and grip finishes as well as indoor matt, so you can often continue the same look through the stacker doors onto the alfresco. Keep the floor level and the laying direction the same for the strongest effect. Browse outdoor tiles and patio tiles for the outside.

Warmth and comfort

Tile stays cool through a Sydney summer and works well with underfloor heating in winter. Soften a large tiled floor with rugs, timber furniture and warm tones such as beige, cream and travertine. If you would rather have timber underfoot in bedrooms, see our timber flooring.

FAQs

What size tile is best for a living room?

For most living rooms, 600 x 1200 mm is the sweet spot. It gives a spacious look with few grout lines and is still manageable to lay. Very large rooms can take 1200 x 1200 mm.

Are polished tiles a good idea in a living room?

They can be, in a dry, formal space. Polished tiles reflect light and look luxurious, but they show dust and footprints and are slippery when wet. Matt, honed or lappato finishes are easier for everyday family living.

Can my living room tile continue onto the alfresco?

Often, yes. Choose a range that also comes in an outdoor finish with a P4 or P5 rating for the outside area, and keep the colour and laying direction the same for a seamless look.

Are tiles cold underfoot in winter?

Tiles feel cool, which suits a Sydney summer. In winter, rugs help, and tiles pair very well with underfloor heating because they hold and spread the warmth.

Which tile looks suit a living area?

Warm, natural looks such as travertine, limestone and soft stone in beige and cream suit most homes. Terrazzo and micro cement looks suit more modern interiors, and marble looks suit formal living and dining rooms.
