Large format porcelain and ceramic tiles in 600 x 1200 mm and bigger, in travertine, marble, stone and concrete looks, for open-plan floors, bathrooms and indoor-outdoor living with fewer grout lines.

What counts as large format?

In the tile trade, large format usually means 600 x 1200 mm and bigger. This collection gathers ranges made in large sizes, and many also come in 600 x 600 and 300 x 600 mm so you can use the same tile in a small bathroom and a big living area. The biggest sizes include 1200 x 1200 mm, Porcelanosa wall tiles at 596 x 1500 mm and 1200 x 2780 mm. For a single sheet over a whole wall or benchtop, see slab tiles.

Why go big

  • Fewer grout lines: the floor reads as one calm surface, and there is less grout to clean.
  • More space: large tiles make rooms feel wider, especially open-plan living areas.
  • Longer patterns: marble veins and travertine bands such as Marvel Travertine Look Vein Cut and Travertine Bianco Veincut show at full length.
  • Indoor to outdoor: ranges such as Precious Travertine come in matt and grip finishes, so the same tile runs out to the patio.

Looks and finishes

Most of the range is porcelain in matt, with grip and External finishes for wet areas and outdoors. You will find travertine, marble, stone, concrete, terrazzo and limestone looks, plus Spanish ranges such as Coral, Durango, Lamu and Vela, and Barro Terracotta for a warm floor. Slip ratings run from P3 for indoor floors to P4 and P5 for outdoor tiles and pool areas. Value options include Builders Range Calacatta Vero, Republic and Polar Ice; see builder ranges.

Installing large tiles

Large tiles need a flat, well-prepared floor, as small dips show up as lippage between tiles. Tilers usually use a levelling clip system and full adhesive coverage on the back of each tile. Find adhesives and levelling systems in tile adhesives and tiling accessories.

FAQs

What size is considered a large format tile?

Tiles of 600 x 1200 mm and bigger are generally called large format. Some ranges go up to 1200 x 1200 mm and even 1200 x 2780 mm. Even larger single sheets are sold as slabs.

How much extra should I order for large format tiles?

Allow about 20 percent on top of your measured area. Large tiles produce bigger offcuts and are harder to reuse in small gaps, so the extra covers cuts and the odd breakage.

Do large format tiles need a levelling system?

Most tilers use one. Large tiles show any unevenness at the edges, and a clip and wedge levelling system holds the tiles flush while the adhesive sets. The floor itself also needs to be flat before tiling starts.

Can large format tiles be used on walls?

Yes. Large tiles on walls give a clean, modern look with few joints, especially in showers. They need full adhesive coverage and a strong, flat wall, so check the weight with your tiler.

Do large tiles crack more easily?

Not if they are laid correctly. Cracks usually come from an uneven floor or gaps in the adhesive under the tile. A well-prepared floor and full adhesive coverage give a strong, long-lasting result.
