Hand-glazed tiles from Japan

Japanese tiles are prized for their glazes. Each piece in this collection is glazed by hand, so the colour pools, thins and speckles slightly differently on every tile. The effect is subtle and calm, with a depth that flat, printed glazes cannot match. Our Japanese collection comes from Kazoku, which specialises in hand-glazed Japanese mosaics.

The range

  • Kazoku Hatsu Square: a small square mosaic for walls and splashbacks.
  • Kazoku Hatsu Border: a border mosaic for edging a niche, bath or splashback.
  • Kazoku Sapporo Green Speckle: finger mosaics with a speckled green glaze.
  • Kazoku Osaka Speckle: finger mosaics with a fine speckle across the glaze.

Colours include Oribe green, wheat, white, cream, brown, burgundy, mahogany, aqua, teal and espresso. Because every sheet varies, order everything for one wall at the same time so the tiles come from the same batch.

Where to use Japanese mosaics

These porcelain tiles are made for walls in bathrooms, showers, kitchens and laundries, and two of the designs are also rated for floors. They suit:

  • a splashback behind a simple timber or stone benchtop;
  • a shower niche or bathroom feature wall;
  • a powder room where you want quiet texture;
  • a kitchen island or curved wall, as finger mosaics wrap gently around curves.

Styling a Japanese-inspired room

Keep the palette natural: timber, stone, linen and soft light. Pair green or wheat glazes with a pale concrete tile or stone look tiles on the floor, and choose brushed or matte tapware. A soft white grout keeps the look clean. For more finger shapes, see kit kat tiles. For more colour-led mosaics, browse green tiles and the wider mosaic tiles range. You can also order the Kazoku Japanese Mosaic Sample Box from sample packs to compare glazes at home.

FAQs

What makes hand-glazed Japanese tiles different?

The glaze is applied by hand, so its thickness and colour vary slightly across each tile and each sheet. This gives a soft, crafted look with more depth than a printed glaze.

Will every Kazoku tile look the same?

No. Variation in tone and speckle is part of the character. Blend sheets from different boxes as you lay them so the colour spreads naturally across the wall.

Are Japanese mosaic tiles suitable for a shower?

Yes. These Kazoku mosaics are porcelain and suit shower walls, and two of the designs are rated for floors. Use a good-quality grout and keep the joints sealed in wet areas.

Can I see Kazoku tiles before I order?

Yes. The Kazoku Japanese Mosaic Sample Box lets you compare the glazes at home, and you can also order single samples from the tile pages.
