The fish scale shape

A fish scale tile has a rounded top and a curved base, so each row nests into the one below like scales or overlapping fans. The result is a soft, flowing pattern that suits coastal, Art Deco and classic interiors. It brings movement to a wall without needing a loud colour. The pattern looks best when it starts from a full row at a visible edge, such as the benchtop or the top of a bath.

Marble or porcelain?

Marble fish scale mosaics come on mesh sheets. Fishscale Carrara is available honed or tumbled: honed is smooth and even, while tumbled has softened edges and an aged surface. Fishscale Pietra Grey Honed gives a deeper grey with fine white veins. The Fishscale Concave Surface Mosaic has a curved face that adds shadow and depth. Real marble needs sealing.

Tiffany Series porcelain is a floor and wall tile in a wide spread of colours, including blues, greens, sage, pink, beige, black and white. Porcelain needs no sealing, which makes Tiffany an easy choice for splashbacks and busy family bathrooms.

Where to use fish scale tiles

  • A kitchen splashback, laid with the scales pointing up or down.
  • A shower feature wall or niche.
  • A full wall behind a freestanding bath.
  • A powder room, where a bold colour can take centre stage.

Most of the range also suits floors, but the shape needs many curved cuts at the edges, so it is mostly used on walls.

Styling ideas

Blue and green fish scales feel coastal and pair well with white subway tiles or a plain white tile floor. Pink and sage tones suit brushed brass. White Carrara scales work with almost anything. See blue tiles and sage green tiles for colour-matched pieces, or explore other shapes in penny round tiles and mosaic tiles.

FAQs

Are fish scale tiles hard to install?

They take more care than square tiles because each row nests into the last and the edges need curved cuts. Mosaic sheets make it easier, as the pieces are already spaced. Use an experienced tiler and plan where the pattern will start.

Which way up should fish scale tiles go?

Either way works. Scales pointing up give a classic fan look, while scales pointing down look more like fish scales or roof shingles. Lay a few tiles out on the floor first to decide.

Can I use fish scale tiles in a shower?

Yes. Porcelain and sealed marble fish scales both suit shower walls. Keep the grout sealed and wipe the wall down after use to stop soap building up in the curves.

What grout colour suits fish scale tiles?

A matching grout lets the curves blend for a soft look. A contrasting grout, such as white with blue tiles, outlines every scale and makes the pattern the focus.
