Black and charcoal tiles for contrast and depth, from matt slate-look porcelain floors and 20 mm pavers to nero marble mosaics, kit kat and subway tiles for walls and splashbacks.

Shades of black and charcoal

Not every black tile is jet black. This range runs from deep charcoal and slate greys through to true black, and includes black-and-white marble mosaics where nero dots or borders frame Carrara. Many ranges come in several colours, and this page shows the black or charcoal variant of each tile.

Materials and looks

  • Porcelain: matt and grip-finish floor tiles in slate and stone looks, including outdoor ranges with matching 20 mm pavers and coping.
  • Marble and stone mosaics: Nero Marquina tumbled stone, basketweave and octagon patterns with nero dots, and hexagon mosaics with black borders. See marble mosaic tiles.
  • Wall tiles: black subway tiles, concave kit kat stacks, Spanish wall tiles and Kazoku Japanese mosaics for splashbacks and feature walls.
  • Terrazzo: terrazzo-look tiles and terrazzo kit kat mosaics in darker tones for a speckled finish.

Where black tiles work best

Black makes a strong feature wall, shower niche or splashback, and a dark floor anchors a bright room. In a small bathroom, use black on one wall or the floor and keep the rest light so the room does not close in. Outdoors, charcoal pavers hide dirt well around pools and paths. Choose grip or external finishes with a P4 or P5 rating for outdoor tiles.

Dark, glossy surfaces show limescale and dust more than mid tones, so matt and honed finishes are easier to live with on floors. Natural marble mosaics should be sealed, while the porcelain needs no sealing.

Pairing black tiles

Grout: black or charcoal grout gives a seamless, solid look. White or light grey grout turns black subway and kit kat into a graphic pattern. Browse tile grout for colours.

Tapware: brushed brass and gold warms black tiles up. Chrome gives a crisp, classic contrast. Tonal matte black tapware suits a moody, minimal room. For the classic monochrome look, pair black with our white tiles.

FAQs

Do black tiles make a bathroom look smaller?

They can if used on every surface. Used on the floor or one feature wall with lighter walls elsewhere, black adds depth without shrinking the room. Good lighting matters more with dark tiles.

Are black floor tiles hard to keep clean?

Black shows dust, lint and dried water marks more than mid tones, especially in gloss. A matt or honed finish, and a charcoal rather than jet black shade, is much easier to live with day to day.

Should I use black or white grout with black tiles?

Black or charcoal grout gives a seamless surface and hides staining. White grout makes the tile layout stand out, which suits subway and kit kat patterns but needs more cleaning on floors.

Can black tiles be used around a pool?

Yes, if you choose an external or grip finish with a P4 or P5 slip rating. Dark pavers absorb more heat in full sun, so consider a charcoal or mid grey where people walk barefoot.
